Max Verstappen secures pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris coming in second after a strong qualifying performance at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. Verstappen's adjustments to his Red Bull's setup gave him a significant advantage over Norris' McLaren following their earlier battle in the sprint race.
"The qualifying went really well," Verstappen said. "We tried to adjust the car a little bit after what we learned this morning, and I think it worked well.
"The car felt a lot better for me today, I could attack the corners a bit more, and every run was just on point. It was very enjoyable out there."
Norris added: "I think as much as we could do today. I think Max was in a league of his own and clearly much quicker than what we had. So I'm happy.
"Tricky conditions, it felt a bit more difficult than it was yesterday, a lot closer. More difficult to get the laps in and perfect the laps."
Verstappen will face an investigation after the session for his slow exit from the pit lane, even though similar incidents in the past did not lead to grid penalties.
Oscar Piastri's second McLaren initially set the third fastest time, but his quickest lap was
invalidated shortly after for exceeding track limits at Turn 6.
The deletion of Piastri's lap time pushed him down to seventh on the grid, elevating George
Russell of Mercedes to third and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari to fourth.
Lewis Hamilton secured fifth place on the grid, while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who went off track at Turn 8 on his final flying lap, reported damage to the underside of his car.
Despite Verstappen's strong performance, his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez could only manage eighth on the grid, with a lap time over 0.6 seconds slower than the 1:04 benchmark.
Nico Hulkenberg claimed ninth place for Haas, leading Esteban Ocon of Alpine, who also featured in the top ten during Friday's sprint qualifying session.
Daniel Ricciardo will start 11th for RB after narrowly missing out on Q3. He will be ahead of Kevin Magnussen of Haas, Pierre Gasly's Alpine, Yuki Tsunoda's RB, and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin in 15th.
Alex Albon of Williams narrowly missed out on Q2 by 0.080 seconds and will start 16th on the grid, ahead of Lance Stroll of Aston Martin in 17th, Valtteri Bottas of Sauber in 18th, Logan Sargeant of Williams in 19th, and Zhou Guanyu in last place for Sauber.
