Sprint Shootout
June 28, 2024
Max Verstappen is leading Lando Norris in the sprint qualifying session in Austria.
Verstappen secured pole position for Saturday's Austrian Grand Prix sprint race by edging out Lando Norris by 0.093 seconds in the sprint qualifying.
Verstappen dominated all three stages of qualifying, but Norris posed a challenge in the final stage by setting a fast lap on soft tires.
The 24-lap sprint race, which awards championship points to the top eight finishers, will be held on Saturday at the Red Bull Ring before Sunday's Grand Prix qualifying.
Oscar Piastri will start from third place in the sprint race, followed by George Russell in fourth and Carlos Sainz in fifth.
Lewis Hamilton's error at Turn Three forced him to start sixth, with Sergio Pérez behind him in seventh.
Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly continued their strong form, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, in the sprint qualifying.
Charles Leclerc will start tenth after encountering issues in setting a time during the final stage of qualifying.
Kevin Magnussen narrowly missed out on a spot in the final stage of qualifying and will begin the sprint race in 11th place.
Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso will start 12th and 13th, respectively, after Stroll's mistake in the final corner impacted his qualifying performance.
Yuki Tsunoda qualified 14th ahead of Logan Sargeant in 15th, who outperformed his teammate Alex Albon in the sprint qualifying session.
Daniel Ricciardo will start 16th on the grid, just missing out on a spot in the second stage of qualifying by 0.023 seconds.
Valtteri Bottas qualified 18th, while Zhou Guanyu will start from the back of the grid in the second Sauber due to a deleted lap time for track limit violations.
