A bit of history
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is a relatively new name on the calendar (first used in 2020), but it takes place at one of Formula 1’s most legendary circuits: Imola, officially known as Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Located in Imola, Italy, within the Emilia-Romagna region, hence the name.
Imola is sadly best known for the tragic 1994 San Marino Grand Prix:
Roland Ratzenberger died during qualifying
Ayrton Senna was killed during the race — one of F1’s darkest weekends
Senna’s death at Tamburello still resonates deeply. Fans leave tributes at the corner to this day.
After a 14-year absence, Imola returned during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as F1 sought European-based alternatives to fill the calendar. It was revived under the new name Emilia Romagna GP and quickly regained permanent status
