A bit of history
The Spanish Grand Prix traces its roots back to 1913, but it officially became part of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1951. In its early years, it rotated between circuits such as:
Pedralbes (1950s, later dropped due to safety)
Jarama (Madrid)
Montjuïc Park (Barcelona’s scenic street circuit, dropped after a fatal 1975 crash)
Jerez (used in the late 1980s and as a backup in 1997)
These races helped build the sport’s popularity in Spain, but lacked long-term stability — until a permanent home was found.
Since 1991, the Spanish GP has been held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, just outside Barcelona. Built ahead of the 1992 Olympics, it’s become a key venue in modern F1. While the Barcelona circuit is under contract through 2026, there has been discussion of alternating with Madrid, which is proposing a semi-street circuit for future events. Whether the GP stays in Catalunya or migrates, its place in F1’s European backbone remains strong.
