Sergio Perez, the talented driver at Red Bull Racing, is currently facing uncertainty about his future with the team despite having a contract extension. The recent 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix showcased his resilience and determination as he finished in the seventh position after starting the race in 16th place due to a mishap in the qualifying session.
Amidst speculations and evaluations from key figures within the team such as Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, Perez remains focused on his performance on the track, choosing to ignore the external noise surrounding his future. The team management seems to be carefully assessing their options regarding the Mexican driver, hinting that a decision might be made after the Belgian Grand Prix, marking the end of the first part of the Formula 1 season.
Perez's journey throughout the Hungarian GP weekend was a rollercoaster of emotions, from a promising start to a setback in qualifying, followed by a remarkable race where he showcased his skills and determination by climbing up the grid to secure a respectable seventh-place finish. His ability to bounce back from challenges and deliver solid performances under pressure highlights his potential and value as a driver in the competitive world of Formula 1.
Marko was adamant that acknowledging Perez’s good performance doesn’t change anything and stated:
“We are sticking to our approach, on Monday after Spa I will fly to England and discuss the procedure with [Christian] Horner.”
“That was probably Sergio’s strongest race since China, I would say,” Horner informed the media in Budapest, which included GrandPrix247.
“So he should take some confidence out of today’s [Sunday’s] race. If he had qualified more in position yesterday [Saturday], you could see he would have been in a much more competitive position,” he stated.
When questioned about the speculations regarding his future at Red Bull, Perez stated: “It will go off. The noise has to be completely shut down from my side and I am fully focused on myself, on maximizing my own performance and to work with the team.
“At the end of the day, the only thing that matters to me are the people working with me, so I just have to give my very best to them because they deserve it.
“The most positive is that the pace is there, not like a few weekends ago where we were lacking it. That is the most positive.
” I just have to take the positives,” he went on. “We had a very strong Friday, we had a strong race in terms of pace – the pace is there, so that is a positive. The rest, I am sure it will take care of itself. It is a matter of time. The most important is that the pace is there and I really hope that for Belgium, I can be back fighting for the podium.”
The Red Bull driver, under pressure, explained that his mistake in qualifying was simply due to pushing too hard at the wrong moment, a situation that could have affected anyone.
“The track just got wetter in Turn 8, I was going through there, some other drivers had a similar issue but to a lesser extent. I think I take it as it is, I will learn from those errors, but they can happen to anyone.
“So head down and like I said, the most important is the pace is there,” he repeated.
Perez was asked to summarize his weekend in Hungary, to which he replied: “Positive in regards to the pace, very negative with my mistake from yesterday [Saturday]. But head down, the season is long and the most important is the pace is there.”
Red Bull is feeling the heat in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, with McLaren currently in second place and trailing by just 51 points with 11 races left in the season. It is crucial for Perez to step up and contribute points, particularly since Max Verstappen is occupied with defending his Title in an RB20 that is no longer the top-performing car on the track.
